This little guy is a frequent visitor these days. It had been a long time since I'd seen a hummingbird at rest, or flying. Living too many years in big cities made me appreciate little things like this. When we saw him today, we also heard him. I don't think I've heard a hummingbird's hum since I was a kid. One of the many joys of living in Forks.

What do they sound like? I love hummers. Nice picture.

You're actually hearing their wings beat. I couldn't think of how to describe it; so, I asked my engineer husband (who is the other half of the 'we' who heard it) to describe it. He says to take a deck of cards, and rifle them as if you are shuffling them, as quickly as you can. The sound you hear is a slow version of the hummingbird. It gets louder as they get closer - one 'buzzed' us the next day, flying toward us to within about a foot of our faces before flying off! Close up and personal!
