Getting ready for winter

This is the time of year that we lay in a supply of wood to burn for winter. This is our yet-un-stacked pile in the rain we've had off and on the last couple of days. Rain makes for a good excuse not to be doing all those pesky outdoor chores. Yes, I do love a good rainstorm! ;~)

I have a fascination with wood furnaces at home because I didn't grow up with one and don't have one now. I have this romanticized image of sitting by a wood fire drinking hot cocoa and making out. :-)

But most people tell me it makes the apartment/room dusty and ashy. I guess I'll settle for a fake fire.

We have an insert in our fireplace, with a glass front. We can see and enjoy the fire, yet the soot and ash stay controlled.

As for the drinking hot cocoa and making out... a fire definitely has its, um, moments. We enjoy it, anyway.

Cool pic. That is a lot of wood to stack. I always like a good wood pile. Splitting is OK, its the stacking I can do without.

They say that wood warms you 4 times. First when yo cut the tree, second when you split it, third when you mash your hands stacking it, fourth when you heat your home, fifth when you drop a log on your foot.
