Brilliant mushroom

We have been having clouds and rain today, and we stayed inside. All this rain produces lots of mushrooms, and it's mushroom gathering season. Not this one, though. According to the Mushroom Identification guide at http://www.gardenbythesea.org/about/mushroom/ , this is Amanita muscaria · Fly Agaric or Fly Amanita. NOT edible, but a pretty red in this one, and a brown older one below. The red stands out in the lawn!
We'd never seen this type of mushroom before, so couldn't resist getting a couple of worm's eye views of them. I left the little leaf on the red one for perspective, then noticed the fly on the side - probably waiting to warm up enough to move.
The bottom one looks like it could be a gnome house! I can just picture a little set of stairs going up around the stem, and windows opening on the sides.

It doesnt look real. It looks like the mushroom on Mario Brothers games.

Very pretty but not suitable for the morning omelette.

They do look great. I published a pic of one on my other blog last week at http://ackworthborn.blogspot.com/2007/10/abc-wednesday-o-is-for-oswaldtwistle.html with links to several others. Some commentators didn't think they grew in the States but they clearly do.

Wow - I came here thinking that was a garden gnome type mushroom!

Eliane's right though - I wouldn't be rushing to put it in my omelette!

I have seen this type of mushroom on some other sites too. I have never seen one of these in person.
It looks pretty neat and always reminds me of Alice in Wonderland!

That be the mushroom called "magic'. Don't eat em unless you want to take a little "trip"!
